Transferring a domain to a new registrar

Published: Sunday, 21 June 2020

A purchased domain name is associated to a registrar. To migrate a .com domain from the current registrar to a new registrar, the following steps need to occur.

  1. Remove clientTransferProhibited status

If the domain has clientTransferProhibited status, remove it. It prevents any transfer of the domain. Do this via the current registrar, it may also be known as Registrar Lock.

  2. Request an EPP Code

An EPP code is used to prove ownership of the domain. Request this via the current registrar. It will be sent via email to the current registrant’s email address.

EPP Code may also be referred to as EPP key or AuthInfo code

  3. Transfer the domain

Via the new registrar, purchase a transfer and extension for the domain. The EPP Code from the previous step will have to be provided.

  4. Wait and approve any steps

Throughout the process the registrant may be requested to confirm or deny any transfers. To possibly speed up the process, confirm any transfers. But the current registrar has no obligation to do this and transfers may take up to five days.
