Windows 8.1 setup notes

Setup

The start bar is gone, instead a bunch of square tiles appear. The links in the traditional start menu can be found if you click on the down button in the bottom left of the start screen.

For control panel and other setup, right click on the start button on your desktop.

To run as administrator, right click on your program, then right click again on your program.

Port 80 and 443 has already been used by something else.

wwahost.exe is a Windows program.

Don’t worry about x64 versions of programs unless they will use up a lot of memory (over 2G).

Uninstall the Skype version that comes with Windows 8.1. The GUI is huge and takes up the whole screen. Instead, download Skype for Windows Desktop.

Adjust sound. Right click speaker → Sound → Communications → Do Nothing

Turn off auto maximize when you drag a window near the top the screen. Control Panel → Ease of Access → Ease of Access Center → Make the mouse easier to use → Make it easier to manage windows → check Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen.
